Do dentists perform plastic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery or dentistry may involve adding or removing material to or from teeth. Some dentists prefer “tooth-friendly cosmetic dentistry,” which refers to procedures that generally don't do anything “irreversible” for your teeth. Oral surgeons can also perform facial liposuction, a common and popular procedure designed for permanent removal of adipose tissue. A cosmetic dentist is responsible for a variety of procedures, from minor repairs to major surgeries.

Here are some of the cosmetic procedures they offer. For dental bonding, the aesthetic dentist applies a moldable resin to the tooth and hardens it with ultraviolet light. Tomorrow, a subcommittee of the California State Legislature is expected to pass Senate Bill 1336, which, if enacted, would make it legal for dentists trained in oral surgery to perform cosmetic surgery on the face. But they say they can't accept the idea that dentists — perhaps well-trained, but without medical degrees — can perform cosmetic plastic surgery.

As the population ages and more Americans seek cosmetic surgery, doctors of all stripes (dermatologists, gastroenterologists, gynecologists) are taking advantage and performing cosmetic surgery. Dentists are performing invasive cosmetic surgeries, including breast augmentation due to a “huge gap” in a legal system that has left patients severely harmed, the maximum body of plastic surgeons warned.
